The Mashup

Inspired by our love of musical mashups, this new collaborative project brings you four new beers that combine some of the greatest hits from eight UK breweries.

The idea is simple.

The eight breweries were coupled up and each pairing was tasked with creating a new collaboration inspired by two of their best-loved recipes.

And, as a nod to the musical inspiration for the idea, they’ll also co-create a playlist to accompany the beer, giving a sense of the personalities and passions of the folks responsible for what’s in your glass.

But first, let us introduce the breweries and the beers…

Purrr Well, Friends
New England DIPA

Be Well Friends is a Southern Hemisphere dominated triple IPA, which was released as part of a series of beers which highlighted hand-selected big New Zealand hops to see how they can be utilised for modern, high ABV.

Purrr is a chewy, feathery-soft IPA showcasing Mosaic and Strata hops for flavours of melon, passionfruit and strawberry bubble gum.

Cloudwater has chosen Unit 9 Taproom, Enid Street, The Magnet & Prairie Schooner to pour all 4 mashup beers!

Beak has chosen Beak Brewery Taproom & The Hole In The Wall Brighton to pour all 4 mashup beers!

Never Known Sharks Like It
New England DIPA

Never Known Fog Like It was our first New England Pale, which was inspired by the early Cloudwater, Magic Rock & original East Coast Hazy Pales. We predict that the hops, hopping rate & water chemistry of these two beers should blend very well.

The key inspiration for the original beer was to take Even Sharks to its natural conclusion… a DIPA with 3 dry hop additions and the hop pairing of Citra and Galaxy. Crazy that it took us 6 or 7 years to make it happen though!  Judging by the popularity whenever we release it... it was a good move. By adding Mosaic and Simcoe in the mash up version we've basically created a true monster from the deep!  Expect some additional pithy grapefruit, pine and dank tropics to the Sharks citric focussed bite.

Verdant has nominated Verdant Brewery Taproom to pour all four mash up beers.

Rivington has chosen Riley's Taproom and Wine Bar, Plug & Taps, Real Crafty Wigan & Rivington Brew Co Taproom.

Super Gold Finger Discount
Pale Ale with Mosaic Hops & Cedar Wood

What beer are you mashing?
Super Gold

What is the inspiration and history behind the original beer?
The Super Gold is the most “conceptual” of the four core beers. As big fans belgian pale ales), we set out to make a “rustic” (not a fan of that word) lager that touched on all the things we like about their bitter, hoppy, pleasantly estery profile, but achieved in a quite different way and still retaining it’s personality as a pilsner.

What key parts of the recipe do you think will mash particularly well together?
The super pale grist is the perfect base for lots of hops and rich woody aromatics from the cedar..

What's a go to album you play on a brew day?
Pony by Orville Peck

Siren’s chosen venues are Siren Tap Yard & Nags Head Reading

Newbarns has nominated Salt Horse & Newbarns taproom

SPLUR
New England DIPA

We tossed and turned around some of our best and brightest historical brews here at Polly’s, but we ultimately opted to go for a classic - crowd favourite, and OG Augment beer, Spur for our mashup. Spur came about as part of our original launch trio of Augment releases way back in 2019. Inspired by the work of both the US east coast pioneers as well as our domestic contemporaries - this was part of our attempt to elevate our beers to the next level.

Both Spur and Plur share similar hop bills, so we’re expecting a high-juice, low bitterness flavour profile to the nines, but melding the water chemistry of this beer - our Welsh with Overtone’s Scottish water profiles, along with our bespoke yeast profile should create an ultra-soft DIPA, so pillowy that Tempur are basing their newest technology on it.

PLUR actually stands for Peace, Love, Unity and Respect which is best recognised in the rave culture. To us, this was everything our brewery stood for, from being associated with music to our core values. When the beer launched in January 2021, it helped revolutionize Overtone as a brewery making great hoppy New England IPAs, the brewery we were aiming to be. The recipe actually contains 5 different hops so it’s a particularly good beer to mash up as most other IPA recipes have at least 2 of these hops. So it’s very easy to play around with!

Pollys’ have chosen Mold Ale House, That Beer Place

Overtone have nominated Koelschip Yard & The Hanging Bat
